Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)
Evaluation of the Tucson GEAR UP Project
This research project constitutes the program evaluation component
of a Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR
UP) project funded by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) Office
of Teacher and Student Development Programs Service. The Tucson GEAR UP project will serve approximately 3,500 students, the entire class of 2012 currently attending 14 Tucson middle schools.
The Tucson GEAR UP project is dedicated to ensuring equal access to a college education for students from low income families by providing support services from 6th grade through their graduation from high school. In addition to support for teacher professional development, the project offers academic enrichment and college awareness programs, emphasizing Math, reading, science, technology, career planning, and parent involvement.
The ERAD evaluation team works closely with project staff, stakeholders, and partnering organizations to collect and interpret data; to maintain an evaluation database; and to provide annual reports and ongoing feedback that will help the project staff and partnering organizations continuously improve services to stakeholders.
Partners in the Tucson GEAR UP Project include KB Home, Pima Community College, Principal Tutoring, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, Sunnyside Unified School District, The University of Arizona, Tucson Medical Center, Tucson Unified School District, and the U.S. Department of Education. Within the University of Arizona, partners include: the College of Education; the College of Humanities; the College of Science; Early Academic Outreach; and the Institute for Children, Youth and Families.
The objectives of the evaluation are:
- to provide process data for reporting and for project
improvement;
- to assess the success of the project in reaching desired short and intermediate outcomes; and
- to assess the impact of the project.
